Only 1 in 5 Workers Will Go the Extra Mile

An article in yesterday’s Pittsburgh Business Times indicates that, based on an international study of over 90,000 workers in 18 countries and database records from over 2 million employees, only 1 in 5 workers will go the extra mile to help their companies succeed.

“According to the Towers Perrin Global Workforce Study, there is a huge difference between what companies need from their employees and what those workers are willing to provide. And, the study shows, the more engaged the employees, the more successful the company.”

Interestingly enough, it was running across employee engagement statistics from the Gallup organization several years ago that spurred me on to study the leadership practices and communication strategies that contributed to vibrant and healthy organizations – those with high levels of employee engagement.

What’s the engagement level in your organization – and how do you know? What’s your level of engagement as a leader?
